New Stretch of One Way Traffic Restriction in Seafield Road Broughty Ferry
![]() |
New Section of One Way Traffic in Seafield Road |
Earlier this week Broughty Ferry's latest stretch of one way street was introduced on the southern end of Seafield Road between Grove Academy and Davidson Street. This narrow section of Seafield Road now only permits traffic driving north.
Traffic driving south down Seafield Road from Balgillo Road will find that at the cross roads with Davidson Street their path direct ahead is now "No Entry" and they need to turn right or left down Davidson Street.
Temporarily, there is also no turn available along Davidson Street heading west as this leads to Claypotts Road which is currently closed for complete resurfacing work.
As my photograph taken at twilight shows, the new short section of one way traffic begins by the back entrance to Grove Academy.
This traffic change came from recommendations made by a short life working group. This was formed to address concerns about pupil safety in anticipation of the move of Eastern Primary School to the refurbished old Grove building next door to the new Grove Academy. Chaired by the Chief Executive David Dorward, this group involved Head Teachers and members of the Parent Councils of Grove Academy and Eastern Primary Schools, senior members of staff from the Council's Education and Transportation Departments and Tayside Police and Ferry Councillors.
It is hoped that this measure will divert traffic towards the front entrance of the school on Claypotts Road and reduce the number of vehicles exiting Church Street onto Queen Street. The one way was deliberately introduced during the summer vacation so that residents could get used to this before the school runs resume on Tuesday 12 August.

Church Street Road Restrictions Drag On and Restrict Residents' Parking

Building materials have spilt out over the pavement and into the street. The picture shows that more than half the width of Church Street has been fenced off by the site works. The effect of this is to restrict the number of parking places in a street where residents already compete with shoppers for a parking spot.
I have written to the City Development Department to ask them to get the builders to tidy up their site and minimise their inconvenience to their neighbours in the street.

Grove Academy Visit for School Parking and Pupil Safety Working Group
Yesterday I had a lunch time visit to Grove Academy to meet Depute Head Lesley Elder and members of the Council's Working Group on School Parking and Pupil Safety.
As part of our ongoing programme of school visits, we were there to observe a number of issues including the 'surge' of Grove pupils as they nip down to the centre of Broughty Ferry to purchase their carry out lunches.
Most pupils leaving the school at lunchtime were seen to proceed in an orderly manner down Church Street and cross Queen Street with the help of the skilled Crossing Patroller.
As a result of our observations and discussion on the hoof, a number of road safety measures were explored including:
- making the Queen Street/Church Street intersection into a box junction;
- moving the bus stop currently adjacent to the main vehicular entrance to the school on Claypotts Road to a site closer to the segregated pedestrian entrance to the school;
- moving the flashing school warning lights further up Claypotts Road to provide more advance warning to drivers and
- inserting 20 mph flashing school warning lights on Queen Street.
If I had to prioritise these, I think the 'box junction' at the Queen Street/Church Street junction is the most urgent. This would I am advised provide a better separation of the road traffic from our pupils and our Crossing Patroller at the Church Street/Queen Street Crossing point. In the mornings, when traffic flows are heavy, cars driving west towards Dundee on Queen Street form a continuous queue sometimes leaving the children and the Patroller at the Honda Garage (see picture) without a clear passage across the Queen Street.
This was a most constructive and worthwhile 'meeting'. At the next 'formal' meeting of the Working Group, I shall be pressing for these measures to be implemented to enhance pupil and public safety in and around Grove Academy.

Eastern Primary School Opening Celebration
One of the remarkable features of the new school is the decorative gate to the playground on Church Street. This features art work created by the children commemorating the move from Whinny Brae to Camperdown Street.
The celebrations were held in the Games Hall and involved all the pupils in a series of well chosen musical performances. The event was ably and enthusiastically introduced by the Acting Headteacher, Vivienne Snee.
If I had to choose my two favourite performances, I especially appreciated the two young trumpeters, Cory Milligan and Louis Browne, who serenaded us when we arrived. Later in the proceedings, I enjoyed joining in with the whole school singing 'World In Union' which was a novel choice. Its adapted words helped focus on the new beginnings and possibilities for the current pupils and future generations of children who attend this outstanding Primary School.
