Dundee Bus Users Consultation Meeting Monday 31 October 2016

Your bus matters! Consultation meeting for bus users in Dundee on Monday 31 October 2016
A meeting has been arranged on Monday 31st October at 12.30pm in the Ashton Hall (Caird Hall) City Square, Dundee to discuss bus users views on the recent changes to bus timetables and routes in the city.

The meeting will be chaired by the Bus Users Scotland Network and attended by Elsie Turbine (Director) of National Express Dundee/ Explore and Andrew Jarvis (Director) of Stagecoach. John Berry, Transport Officer with Dundee City Council and elected members will also be in attendance.
Changes are affecting a lot of people, especially older people across Dundee. While the most affected areas appear to be Woodside, Clepington Road, Coldside and Mill O Mains I know there are also issues for bus users in The Ferry.
This meeting follows a successful meeting two weeks ago, where 80 members of the public, most of whom were elderly, attended to have their say.

Please attend the meeting on Monday 31st October to put your views across on what the changes in service routes and timetables mean for you.

More Cuts to Bus Services on Their Way

Earlier today The Herald reported that commuters face more cuts to local bus services following the Scottish Government’s under funding of the concessionary travel scheme.

It will be the Scottish Government’s fault that bus passengers face paying higher fares, but getting less of a service in return in 2013.

Buses are a real lifeline for many communities and residents in our city, particularly for those on low incomes and those people who do not have access to their own transport. For many elderly folk, their bus pass and access to a regular bus service is the difference between being cooped up at home or getting out.

If the SNP led Holyrood Government require bus operators to provide the same concessionary travel scheme with less money, on top of the cut to the bus operators' grant, then the consequences are clear - more fare hikes, more service cuts and more job losses.

It seems the Edinburgh government's intention is to make these cuts and to try to blame the bus companies, while at the same time refusing to support greater regulation of the bus industry. This approach means bus workers and those who rely most on bus services, usually those on lower incomes, will unfortunately pay the price.

Qualified Welcome for New Stagecoach Bus Service Linking central Broughty Ferry with Dundee City Centre from Monday 26 November 2012

Click on timetable to enlarge
The City Council Transport Department have just announced a new bus service linking central Broughty Ferry (Brook Street/Gray Street) and Dundee City Centre.

Starting today, Monday 26 November, Stagecoach will be running the new No 74 service Monday to Friday between 0900 to 1600 - every 30 mins. This bus service will operate via Broughty Ferry Road / Greendykes / Gardyne College /Strathern Road - and into central Broughty Ferry. This will increase the number of daytime buses coming along Brook Street from 3 to 5 buses per hour (4 from West Ferry direction and 1 coming down from Forthill).

I have no doubt that this bus route will be appreciated by residents living south of the railway line in central Broughty Ferry and those visitors that want a bus that delivers them right into the heart of the shopping centre. It's two years since the bus reorganisation when National Express withdrew their buses from running through central Broughty Ferry. At that time many residents, including some who live in sheltered housing, approached me with their concerns. I am sure they will make use of this new service.

One group of residents who won't be putting out the flags are those that live in Dundee Road who rely on the bus, especially some of the older folk who live in the Taypark apartments.

The limited hours for the new service also means that it will not be any use for those that work regular 9-5 hours in Dundee or The Ferry. Perhaps if this new service is a success, we can pressurise Stagecoach to increase the operating times?
