Eastern Primary School Parent Council AGM

On Tuesday evening, the Annual General Meeting of Eastern Primary School took place in the staff room of the school. A group of well motivated and interested parents and carers with children across the school gathered to find out more about the potential work of the Parent Council and to join in where they could.

Claire Leslie was elected as Chairperson. Claire replaced Elaine Smith, the Chairperson for the last two years, who was no longer eligible to remain a member of the Parent Council as her son had moved up to Grove. After a discussion about the responsibilities of the Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Minutes Secretary and Treasurer, volunteers were forthcoming.

In her report, Head Teacher, Gillian Knox confirmed that all the new Primary One children were settling in well and the school was full staffed. She also reported on a number of organisational changes such as the relocation of the resource base and staff room to more central locations within the school thereby freeing up more space for alternative school uses. She also responded to a number of questions from new parents about school photographs, Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS) assessments, science in the curriculum, and the potential for developing a school exchange.

The Parent Council also agreed to develop a link with Broughty Ferry in Bloom.

Well Attended AGM of Forthill Tenants' Group

Iain Flett City Archivist delivering his talk
Yesterday afternoon Forthill Tenants' Association held their Annual General Meeting at the Sheltered Housing Complex in Forthill Drive. The meeting was well attended by tenants and residents living in the dispersed sheltered housing in the Forthill area.

They heard and approved the annual report by the Chairperson, Morag Hutchison and the annual accounts from Treasurer Anne MacDonald. It was reported that the tenants' group had had another positive year with numerous improvements negotiated on behalf of the residents. Some, such as the enhanced emergency exit and the upgraded fire alarms in the complex, were evident to all the regular participants in the programme of activities organised at the centre. From my observation attending the monthly committee meetings, the Committee members are highly committed and effective at robustly representing the interests of Forthill tenants and residents.

After the election of the new Committee, Rita Smart was re-elected Secretary and Morag Hutchison, Chairperson for the coming year.

Following the formal part of the meeting, Iain Flett the City Archivist delivered a talk about the history of Forthill and Broughty Ferry. He also emphasised some of the ways that residents might make use of the archives if they wished to take part in the 'Memories' programme of events connected with marking the centenary of Broughty Ferry becoming part of Dundee.

Last night I attended, by invitation, the Annual General Meeting of Dundee Youth Council. Their meeting was held in the City Chambers in Dundee.

Outgoing Chairperson, Laura Gorman, presented some of the highlights from 2012/13 which are referred to in the Youth Council's Annual Report. She  also reported on the election of their new Office Bearers for the coming year. Daniel Coleman was elected as Chairperson for 2013/14.

Laura also referred to their Manifesto which builds on their citywide survey of undertaken in 2011/12 and which had involved 4494 respondents from our nine secondary schools.

There were also updates from the members of the Youth Council who had led their campaigns over the last year including the It's No Fare Campaign. This campaign aims to:

  • Lower the bus fare for all under 18's to a reasonable price;
  • Improve the reliability of the buses and
  • Increase the frequency of buses.

There were also reports on some of the opportunities Youth Councillors had taken to provide a youth perspective in public consultations and in meetings. Most notably, this included Youth Councillor for Dundee East, Matthew Landsburgh, who had been appointed as a member of the Board of NHS Tayside.

It is clear that Youth Councillors and Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament in Dundee are committed to representing the interests of young people in our City and striving purposefully to do that.

Home Scotland AGM at the McManus Museum and Art Gallery 13 September 2012

Presenting the prize to the winner of the
Best Kept Garden Competition.
Last night I was reporting to the Annual General Meeting of Home Scotland (Housing Association) members in Dundee. This meeting was held in the McManus Galleries and was well attended by members from Dundee, staff of the Association and folk with an interest in social housing and the work of our housing association in Dundee.

The year 2011 to 2012 has been a busy one for the Dundee Area Committee. We have had 8 meetings, been on an 'away day' in the training room of the new Visitor Centre in Camperdown Park and also taken an active part in discussions with members of the other three Area Committees in Scotland.

Our principal achievements as an Area Committee have been:

  • Commenting on and monitoring key changes in the Home family of organisations as these affect our tenants/customers in Dundee;
  • Keeping in touch with wider developments in the Home Group and shaping new developments by having members of our committee on the Board of Home Scotland and the National Customer Panel;
  • Following up issues that committee members bring to the Area Committee;
  • Interviewing key staff from Seddons before endorsing them as single maintenance and repairs contractor for Scotland;
  • Holding three consultations with customers/tenants in Blackness Sheltered Housing, Whorterbank and Whitfield;
  • Developing links between Criminal Justice in Dundee and our Maintenance Manager so that in future some of our neighbourhoods can be benefit from work by offenders on Community Payback Orders;
  • Continuing running the Cleghorn Charitable Trust which provides small grants for basic furnishings for customers/tenants moving into their new home;
  • Exploring ways to cut the energy bills of customers/tenants;
  • Monitoring the performance of the new UK call centre for Home Group and the new repairs contractor for Scotland and
  • Meeting members of the North East England Regional Viewpoint Committee in Durham to see at first hand what their new structure might offer.
Overall it was a very constructive evening with a number of members expressing interest in joining us on the Area Committee.

Eastern Primary School Parent Council AGM

Last night I attended the Annual General Meeting of the Parent Council of Eastern Primary School.

A well attended meeting took place in the staff room at the school, which is now in its new location on Camperdown Street.

After two year as Chairperson, Andy Flack stood down. In his annual report Andy referred to:
  • the value of the Parent Council's decision to gain charitable status in terms of gift aid reclaimed from Revenues and Customs and access to funds to which the Parent Council might now apply;
  • the effectiveness of the Project Board that has been established to oversee the move from Whinny Brae;
  • the success of the fundraisers who had organised enjoyable money spinning events over the year and
  • the hard work of the Teachers unpacking and getting their classrooms ready for the start of the Autumn term in their new buildings.
Andy was replaced by Elaine Smith who has acted as Vice-Chair over the last year.

See 'And God Created the Dighty' at Bf Environment Project 22 March 7pm

Broughty Ferry Environmental Project will be holding their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday March 22nd beginning at 7pm in Broughty Ferry Library.

The AGM will be followed by the screening of five short films made by local film makers. entitled

And God Created the Dighty

These films are about the Dighty burn yet not about the Dighty burn; rather they tell of those who have lived by its banks, whose lives the river flows through as the blood in their veins. Be prepared to be surprised!

Followed by refreshments.
