Help to Keep Oor Oor Wullie Lifesaver in The Ferry

Oor Wullie Lifesaver, Pilot Pier Broughty Ferry Summer 2016During the Oor Wullie Bucket Challenge over the summer many folk have admired the "Life Boatman Wullie" down at the pier as part of the Oor Wullie Bucket Trail. All 70 of the braw statues have now been withdrawn from their various locations and are coming up for auction.
In response, a save Oor Lifesaver Wullie campaign has begun in The Ferry with a JustGiving crowd funding page being set up by Ewan Philp who is both one of the Broughty Ferry Lifeboat Crew as well as a very active member of Broughty Ferry Traders' Association.
Hopefully, the crowd funding will provide the cash to successfully bid for the "Life Boatman Wullie" when it comes up for auction on Tuesday 13th September at the Dundee Rep. All of the money raised to pay for the sculpture will go to The ARCHIE Foundation’s Tayside Children’s Hospital Appeal. Any surplus funds will be split evenly between The ARCHIE Foundation and the RNLI.

So far £5,292 has been raised, which is just over half the target. Please help to raise tthe remainder by next Tuesday.

Broughty Ferry Lifeboat Open Day Sunday 27 Sept 2015

Broughty Ferry Lifeboat
Murray Brown, Coxwain of Broughty Ferry Lifeboat said:

"We invite everyone to come to our open day this Sunday 27 September 2015.

There will be lots to see and do, including a chance to see round the lifeboat itself if the weather is fair enough for this to be safe. Folk can also meet the crew and enjoy refreshments and a barbecue.

It is vitally important to us to establish and maintain close links with the local community. Just like Wave 102, we are here to serve the local community and we appreciate the support we get from Dundee’s local radio station, helping us to keep in touch with the people of Dundee.

It is only through community support that RNLI volunteers can provide the essential service of saving lives at sea."

RNLI Carol Concert 2012 St James Church Broughty Ferry

Last night I attended the annual Lifeboat Carol Service at St James Church. I arrived a few minutes late after coming directly from attending the Development Quality meeting in the Council Committee Rooms.

The Church was packed with every seat taken, so I stood at the back and enjoyed the communal singing and the Christmas songs sung by children from the Forthill Primary School Choir.

As well as celebrating Christmas, it's a time to remember our brave and selfless Broughty Ferry lifeboat crew who go out in all weathers to rescue those in peril on the seas. We finished with a rousing singing of 'Eternal Father, Strong to Save'.

The tea and mince pies in the Church Hall afterwards were much appreciated.

Broughty Ferry Lifeboat Coffee Morning

Lifeboat Jam and Cake for Tea
On Saturday I attended the Broughty Ferry Lifeboat Coffee Morning at Stephen's and West Church Hall. My wife Rowena and I enjoyed the home baking and coffee as well as the opportunity to chat with friends and acquaintances. You can see that we also took advantage of the opportunity to buy some takeaway cakes and jam.

This was a well supported event by members of our community who clearly appreciate the admirable work of our volunteer lifeboat crew and all those that work in the background to ensure that the lifeboat and its crew are well equipped and funded. It's often not appreciated that our Lifeboat does not receive City Council or Scottish Government funding; is relies entirely on donations and fundraising to operate their boats and undertake their rescues.

Lifeboat Open Day Very Well Supported

Broughty Ferry Lifeboat opened its doors and decks today to a public that usually observes their work from the shore line or from reading a newspaper article or watching a TV news bulletin.

Many members of their admiring public were clearly interested to take advantage of the all too rare opportunity to see round the lifeboat shed and the lifeboats.

I think we appreciate why the volunteers crewing and supporting the busiest lifeboat in Scotland have to prioritise rescues over arranging and staffing open days.

I am delighted they opened up the lifeboats and shed today and gave their supportive public a closer peek into the kit they deploy to rescue those in peril on the seas.

It was a great family afternoon out and a good opportunity to gain a closer insight into their rescue work.
