Good as New Sale Saturday 12 October 10am - 2pm YMCA Brook Street Broughty Ferry

On Saturday there will be a Good as New Sale in the YMCA on Brook Street from 10 am - 2 pm.

The money raised from the sale will be split between two good causes:
Grove Academy's Support for Learning Base and
St Stephen’s Kindergarten Project in Meru, Kenya.

Grove Academy has been involved for a number of years developing an exchange programme for teachers and pupils at a school in Meru. Former Depute Head Teacher at Grove Academy, Sheila McLuckie, linked in St Stephen's and West Church with the exchange. After a visit to Meru, St Stephen's began fundraising for the improvement of facilities at a Kindergarten in Meru.

Growing Older in The Ferry - Feedback Event Wednesday 2-4pm 15 May 2013 YMCA

Older people living in Broughty Ferry are invited to the YMCA in Brook Street on Wednesday afternoon to hear what was said about 'Growing Older in The Ferry'. This will be based on views expressed at a consultation event held two months ago in mid March.

This feedback should help identify themes and issues that are important to older people living in Balgillo, Barnhill, Central Broughty Ferry, Panmurefield, Ferryfields and West Ferry. It should also help to identify ways that community organisations in The Ferry might meet those needs and what resources they might need in order to make that provision.

There is no charge for this event.

YMCA Window Boxes Brighten Up The Neighbourhood

Have you noticed the YMCA have planted primulas in their window boxes this year?

Despite the hesitant start to Spring, the flowers are peeking over the top of the window boxes and providing a colourful glimpse of Spring in Brook Street as we pass by.

Well done to the YMCA for brightening up our neighbourhood.

Older People in Broughty Ferry Had Their Say

Last Wednesday afternoon, a group of older people from Broughty Ferry attended a consultation event held at the YMCA in Brook Street.

The event was organised by a new team of Community Engagement Workers who have been funded through the Reshaping Care for
Older People Fund. They are based at at The Volunteer Centre in Dundee.

I attended in a dual capacity as both a Ferry Councillor and an older person.

During the afternoon folk were invited in small groups to have our say about our area over a cup of tea. More specifically, we were aksed what we liked about our area, what we would like to see improved in our community and most importantly, how we could help to achieve this.

It was a productive and interesting afternoon which was helpfully facilitated by the Community Engagement Workers.

Follow Up Event - Date for Your Diary
On Wednesday 15 May 2-4 pm there will be a Feedback Event to hear what was said about growing older in The Ferry.

Older Ferry Folk Have Your Say! Communities in Action Event Wed 13 March 2013 2-4pm YMCA Broughty Ferry

Older people living in Broughty Ferry have been invited to have their say about their area over a cup of tea.

On Wednesday 13 March, 2013 2-4pm they will be welcome to come along to the YMCA in Brook Street. They will be asked about what they would like to see improved in their community and most importantly, how they could help to achieve this?

A new team of Community Engagement Workers for Dundee are based at The Volunteer Centre in Dundee. This new team have been funded through the Reshaping Care for Older People Fund. They will be working closely with older people in the city to help to develop the capacity of communities to better support older people to remain in their own homes for longer. They are organising this event and look forward to meeting older Ferry folk on that afternoon.

The target audience is older people, however, they are not excluding any age groups as it’s a public involvement event and they believe it would be good to hear an intergenerational perspective.

There is no charge for this event.

Broughty YMCA Window Boxes Brighten Up Brook Street

The window sills of the YMCA in The Ferry have been enhanced by new window boxes containing colourful displays of geraniums. The front of each window box proudly display the distinctive YMCA logo. I think these window boxes make a positive contribution to 'lifting' the appearance of the Y's section of Brook Street. Where the YMCA have led, I hope others might follow.

Parkinson's UK Awareness Week and Coffee Morning in the YMCA

This week is Parkinson's Awareness Week throughout the UK. They invite us to support them to find a cure for this progressive neurological condition. One person in every 500 has Parkinson's; that's about 127,000 people in the UK. Most people who get Parkinson's are aged 50 or over but younger people can get it too. One in 20 is under the age of 40.
The Dundee and Angus Parkinson's Group held their annual Coffee Morning on Saturday in the YMCA in Broughty Ferry. As well as coffee and scones, there were stalls selling home baking and children's toys. I took advantage and stocked up on fruit cakes for the freezer!
The local group not only raises money and awareness of Parkinson's, it also acts as a support group. It meets at Meadowside St Paul's Church in Dundee on the last Tuesday of the month at 2pm.
