Organised by Broughty Ferry Traders' Association, the evening of events leading up to the switching on of the Christmas Lights in The Ferry has become a firm favourite in our community. It marks the start of the festive season with fairground rides and street entertainment.
The funfair and Radio Tay stage will be running from 6pm, while local traders including Scotts Butchers and Visocchis will be on hand to offer food and drink throughout the event with some shops staying open throughout the evening.
The event, held on 24 November 2016, gets under way with live entertainment from 6pm. Dundee Lord Provost Bob Duncan will then switch on the lights at 7.30pm.
Motorists should note that the central sections of Brook Street and Gray Street will be closed to traffic from 2pm until 9pm although shops in Broughty Ferry will remain open as usual.

BBC Reveal Broughty Ferry Police Station Under Threat
Yesterday there were revelations from the BBC that 'The future of dozens of police stations across Scotland is under threat.' This list included our Police Station in Broughty Ferry.
The BBC report is extremely worrying. I had been informed that the lease on the current Police Station buildings in Brook Street was coming to an end but that Police Scotland were proposing to move over the road to the former Police Station premises next to the Burgh Halls. If that move is reneged on and Police Scotland are proposing to pull out of Broughty Ferry, I know there will be will be sustained resistance to that.
I am sure that the Broughty Ferry residents would once again demonstrate their opposition to a proposal that they judge to be detrimental, in the same way we saw off the proposal of Tayside Fire and Rescue to downgrade Balmossie Fire Station.
I am certainly determined to resist any reduction in Police Scotland presence in and service to The Ferry.

Positive Responses to Missing Yellow Lines and Gillies Park Improvements
![]() |
Click on image to enlarge |
I received a very prompt explanation from the Roads Maintenance Partnership that the yellow lining had not been forgotten but that "the line painting lorry is currently under repair and the double yellow lines will be repainted once the lorry is back in working order."
On Monday, I visited Gillies Park in Barnhill which is located next to Barnhill Primary School and is accessed by road from Ceres Crescent and by foot from Abercromby Street and Falkland Crescent. I had been expecting to see that the badly rutted car park had been resurfaced and improvements to the lighting in the park had been installed. Having seen that no work had been started and mindful of the fact that funding for this project was available until the end of March, I wrote to the engineer in charge of projects like this.
The good news is that work at Gillies Park will likely start either later this week or early next week. The staff involved have also reassured me that they will provide advance warning to Barnhill Primary School of the definite start date on site.

Brook Street Junction Reopens - Missing Yellow Lines
After five days of closure, the busy junction of Brook Street, Westfield Road, Dundee Road and Claypotts Road in Broughty Ferry reopened on Friday.
The temporary road closure was to allow the surface of this busy crossroads to be burnt off and to be entirely resurfaced to a good depth. The junction needed a thorough resurfacing because of wear and tear from a high volume of traffic and weather damage. These factors had led to ripples in the road and pot holes that had been filled and refilled over the years.
While Tayside Contracts only required five working days to complete the job, unfortunately not all the road markings are yet in place.
As you can see, the double yellow lines at each of the corners have not yet been painted in.
I have written to the Council to let them know that the lines still need repainting before this job is signed off.

Progress Resurfacing Road Junction on Main Street
Earlier today good progress seemed to have been made in resurfacing this badly rutted cross roads.
The contractors arranged for the junction of Claypotts Road, Brook Street, Westfield Road and Dundee Road to be closed for five working days.
Judging by the work already completed, it seems likely that the road will be open again by the weekend.

Notorious Section of Ferry Pavement to be Renewed
I am pleased to report that another notorious section of rutted and cracked pavement on Brook Street is to be upgraded in early February. This is the section that runs on the south side of Brook Street between Gray Street and the Bruach Bar and Restaurant.
Work to upgrade this stretch of pavement is programmed to commence on Monday 3rd February 2014, and will last for approximately 2 weeks. The Contractor for the works is Tayside Contracts.
I complained to the Council about the 'crazy paving' on the stretch of footway outside the Grain Store and Hosie's Electrical shop in Autumn 2012 and suggested that it was an accident waiting to happen.
In Septmber 2013, I responded to the planned pavement upgrading in Gray Street by commenting that this was 100 yards better but that there was miles to go upgrading cracked and uneven pavements in The Ferry.
While this next phase of pavement reconstruction work is undertaken, the following temporary traffic restrictions will apply:
If you have any queries regarding the traffic restrictions, please contact Mr L Grubb, Senior Engineer, Roads Maintenance Partnership, by telephoning 01382 434000.

- In the interest of public safety, a lane closure will be implemented and westbound traffic will be diverted via St Vincent Street, King Street and Gray Street for the duration of the works.
- The works will be carried out in sections, so that at least one area will be kept available for taxi parking adjacent to the works. Parking will still be allowed on the north side of Brook Street.
- Access to car parks within this area will be maintained, and vehicular, delivery access will be maintained to properties, although we ask for vehicular traffic movements to be kept to a minimum where possible.
- Some minor delays may be encountered during some phases of the works.

Was Planning Permission Granted for this Illuminated Advertisement in The Ferry?
A constituent has queried with me how it was that display advertisements on a bus shelter in Brook Street were now illuminated 24 hours a day? These illuminated advertisements seem to have replaced non illuminated ones which are a common feature of bus shelters in the city including The Ferry.
The constituent thought that the illuminated advertisements were much more visually intrusive; which to the advertiser I suppose is the point of them?
I have written to the planning department for clarification.
