Over 300 Intrepid Dookers Defy the Wind and Rain on New Year's Day 2014

Ready to Dook Broughty Ferry Harbour New Year's Day 2014
Despite the deteriorating weather, at 2:30 sharp, on New Year's Day over three hundred intrepid dookers took to the chilly and choppy water in Broughty Ferry harbour.

While many dookers were dressed in novelty outfits, some proved that their swimming was not compromised by their costumes.  Several swimmers demonstrated their confidence in open water by swimming right across the harbour and back, while a good few swam from the slipway right down to the end of the pier.

If the swimmers were intrepid, so too were their supporters and the spectators who turned out in very good numbers to witness the first major event on The Broughty Ferry calendar.

The dook is very well established as a major spectator event attracting crowds in their thousands to Broughty Ferry harbour every new year's day. All credit to The Phibbies for organising another safe and successful dook.

Broughty Ferry Dook New Year's Day January 2013

An enthusiastic crowd turned out to witness the 2012 Broughty Ferry Dook yesterday. The spectators lined the harbour and any nearby vantage point such as the ramp running up to the Castle. Luckily for them and the dookers, the wind had almost dropped and the sun was shining.
At 2:30 pm what looked like another record turnout of brave or foolish folk (depending on your viewpoint) bravely took to the water, if only briefly. Organised by Ye Amphibious Ancients' Bathing Association (the Phibbies), who have been in existence nearly 130 years, this is the largest New Year's Day dook on the East Coast of Scotland.

Well done Joyce McIntosh, President of Ye Amphibious Ancients' Bathing Association, the organising committee and the sponsors.

Broughty Weather

Looking West over Grassy Beach this morning.

Well the overnight snowfall in The Ferry may not last long underfoot and the snow may not remain until Good Friday but I think its safe to assume that it will be a chilly Easter weekend ahead.
While we are used to changeable weather, this last few days takes the biscuit.
On Sunday (1st April) our family joined many folk on the beach at Lunan Bay enjoying the sun. My younger daughter, a veteran of the Broughty dook on New Year's Day, even took a short swim.
Two days later we have the central heating back on full blast.
In retrospect the weather on Sunday was playing us a kind of April fool.
