Reporting on Quarterly Meeting of The Ferry Community Planning Partnership held on Thursday 17 November

The Ferry Local Communjity Planning Partnership
On Thursday afternoon, I attended the Quarterly meeting of The Ferry Local Community Planning Partnership which was held in Broughty Ferry Libary beginning at 17:30.

I always find this a useful meeting to attend because the agenda includes updates from voluntary, council and community organisations as well as presentations and consultations about new and proposed developments.

At our meeting on Thursday, the LCPP heard a formal presentation and consultation from Council staff about the proposed enhanced facilities for charging electric vehicles in the Queen Street Car Park. I have previously reported about this in this blog. Folk who want to hear this presentation may do so when it is repeated at the next meeting of the Broughty Ferry Community Council to be held on Tuesday 6 December 2016 beginning at 7pm in Broughty Ferry Library.

The LCPP also had a presentation on initial results of the Engage Broughty Ferry survey and the implications of the 'A Fair Way to Go: Report of the Dundee Fairness Commission'. A follow up event to tease out the way forward for partners will be held in early 2017.

Two new PCs from the local policing team for Broughty Ferry introduced themselves and committed to resuming their regular attendance at further meetings of the LCPP and other community organisations.

Engage Broughty Ferry - let The Ferry Local Community Plannning Partnership know about your Priorities

As part of the current process to create new Local Community Plans, Dundee Partnership is seeking the views of local people about ways in which the quality of life can be improved in each electoral area of the city.

Please respond to the online survey and let the Dundee Partnership and The Ferry Local Community Plannning Partnership know about your priorities and ideas.

There are 15 general themes to the online questionnaire, each with a simple question which the partnerships would also like answered as well as an opportunity for you to tell them about your priorities and the improvements needed.

All in a Productive Day's Work

Beach Lane Path resurfaced
right to the end
Yesterday was a long but productive day.

I started my day early by reading some candidates' reports for the Head Teacher interviews taking place from 10:00 in Dundee House. On the way into the city centre, I dropped into Beach Lane to check that the work on the resurfacing of the muddy path had been completed. Good news that it was looking good and a jogger was out putting the path to the test.

After taking a couple of pictures, I drove along to Albany Road to follow up a constituent's complaint about the state of the unadopted pavements in his end of the street. After gathering some photographic evidence, I drove into town and parked and then walked over to Dundee House.

After three interviews (following two the previous day) and some thoughtful deliberation, we selected our 'preferred candidate' for the post.

I drove back home and took my dog Milli for a walk to Grassy Beach. This also gave me an opportunity to have a look at the progress with rebuilding the coastal pathway near Douglas Terrace and check the temporary signage as the coastal path had been closed, apparently only until the weekend.
Returning home, I had a mug of tea with my wife who had just got back from her work. I then wrote and emailed a short report for a meeting I was missing because it clashed with the quarterly meeting of the Local Community Planning Partnership (LCPP). After remembering to download agendas and papers for the two meetings ahead, I left the house and went round the corner to Grove Academy.

The members of the LCPP, with Evening Telegraph Reporter Michael Owen, convened in the Grove Academy Library. We had a very useful briefing about Welfare Reform and its implications for residents. In the light of the switch to online only applications for new claims for Universal Credit, we discussed where in Broughty Ferry one might gain advice and practical help making an online claim. When libraries were mentioned, I queried whether there would be sufficient numbers of computers in Broughty Ferry Library to cope with the  additional influx of claimants who needed help to make their claims. I also commented on the lack of spaces in our library for interviews with some degree of privacy.

I left this meeting and headed off to attend the Parent Council at Forthill Primary School arriving at 7:15 pm just after it had begun. This was a lively meeting with an extended dialogue between parents/carers and Michael Wood, Director of Education who was asked to respond to a list of twenty written questions that the parent Council had gathered in preparation for the meeting. The most pointed questions from parents were about the rising number of children in the school (current roll 561 pupils) and teh physical capacity of the school to cope; the catchment area of the school; recent budget cuts in Education and their impact on Forthill Primary and Grove Academy and the appointment of a replacement Head Teacher. There was also a discussion about road safety issues outside the school.

After the school bell rang the meeting was concluded but the discussion with parents and carers migrated into the car park. I eventually arrived home for my tea just before 10pm.

Welcome for the Launch of the New Community Plan for The Ferry ward

Last week, the summary of new Community Plan for The Ferry 2012-17 was launched. The areas included in the plan are Central Broughty Ferry, West Ferry, Barnhill, Forthill, Clearwater Park, Ferry Fields, Balmossie and Panmurefield.
This plan reflects many weeks of community research to discern local priorities of our residents throughout Broughty Ferry.
Most of the issues that the plan identifies will not be a surprise but each one is worth pursuing to make small but significant improvements to living in The Ferry.
The commitment of all the community, voluntary and public services to work together to deliver the plan and improve local services, is what will make a difference. Together, I am sure we can make Broughty better.

Launch of The Ferry Community Plan 2012-2017

On Tuesday morning, 22 May 2012, the Council launched the Local Community Plans for each of the eight electoral areas in Dundee. This event took place in the Marryat Hall in Dundee.
Our Local Community Plan for Broughty Ferry lists the changes, developments and improvements local residents would like to see happen. In order to do this the views of residents were gathered. There have been many opportunities for local people to state how they feel about living in The Ferry area, and to express how they think the area can be improved.
Although it is not possible to consult with everyone, Communities staff have gathered information on the priorities many residents feel are important. This information was gathered in a number of ways including:
  • 300 postal surveys were delivered to Forthill and Balgillo areas;
  • Round Table event held at Castle Green;
  • Community Safety survey analysed by Tayside Police;
  • Focused discussions with Community, Council, Traders, Broughty Ferry Development Trust and Forthill Tenants' Association;
  • Focused Facebook consultation with young people at Grove Academy;
  • Consultation through “Glow” with primary School children asking their views about living in Broughty Ferry;
  • Over 500 people spoke to Local Community Planning Partners at Gala Day event and
  • Local workers and Local Community Planning Partnership partners were asked to provide information and view on local priorities.

Walkabout Inspection with Forthill Tenants' Group

On Wednesday morning, I accompanied members of the Forthill Tenants' Group and Council staff from the Housing and Roads Departments on a walkabout around the Forthill area. This provided an opportunity to locate any issues that needed attention and to track what had happened to previously reported matters The Forthill Drive flats (see picture) are 'four in a block' with the distinctive black iron railings and gates. The general condition of the external public and private environment is very good. I noticed many very well tended gardens as we walked round. Some of the concerns expressed by residents, such as parked cars on pavements, are partly because the narrow estate roads are having to cope with a volume of car ownership not envisaged when the estate was built.

Having a regular walkabout seems like a good idea which I think should be tried in other parts of Broughty Ferry. I will raise this at the next meeting of the Broughty Ferry Local Community Planning Partnership.

Meeting of The Ferry Local Community Planning Partnership,

Last night (Thursday 18 November), I attended the quarterly meeting of The Ferry Local Community Planning Partnership (LCPP). This is always a useful meeting to attend, to hear about the plans and proposals of City Council services and other agencies such as Tayside Police, Tayside Fire & Rescue, Broughty Ferry Community Council, Broughty Churches and voluntary groups.

This time our meeting was held in the modern Church Hall in Pamurefield. At the meeting, we were able to hear about arrangements for a public consultation meeting run by Broughty Ferry Development Trust. At their next meeting, on Wednesday 8th December beginning at 7 pm at Castle Green, a feasibility study will be presented on providing facilities at the sandy beach in line with the wishes of the community and to replace the derelict bathing shelter. There will be a presentation of the Feasibility Study by Nicoll Russell and time for questions from the floor.

Big Issues at Ferry Meeting Wed 18 August

At the next meeting of the Ferry Local Community Planning Partnership (LCPP), on Wednesday 18 August, members of the public will be able to hear more about two big issues in Broughty Ferry. Judging by my contacts with constituents, both are controversial.

The first big issue is ab
out the proposed relocation of Eastern Primary School to the former Grove Academy site on the south side of Camperdown Street (item 2 on the Agenda). Director of Education, Jim Collins, will be present. I presume he will explain the proposal, the consultation process that he has been launched and respond to questions. Click of this link to read the questions that I think the Director needs to answer.

The second big issue is Travel Dundee/
National Express Dundee bus services that serve Broughty Ferry residents (Item 3 on the Agenda). Lawrence Davie, Director of National Express Dundee will be on hand to hear issues arising from the introduction of the new bus timetables and service changes in late June and the further changes to the 5A and 5B services last week. My post bag has included numerous complaints from residents inconvenienced by the new timetables and withdrawal of some services.

Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings of the Ferry LCPP.
