Ferry Greengrocers Runners Up at Prestigious London Awards Ceremony

Clementine owners, Jan McTaggart and Carole Sommerville went to London this week to attend The Telegraph’s Best Small Shops in Britain Award Ceremony. Mary Queen of Shops, Mary Portas, presented them with their award as 2nd equal in the ‘Best in Food’ category.
The pair met up with other finalists and had an opportunity to talk to Mary Portas about Broughty Ferry’s thriving shopping centre, in the light of her recent Government report on the state of retail in Britain.
Clementine owners Jan McTaggart and Carole Sommerville were pleased with their achievement:
"We’re delighted that our wee local shop has received this national recognition. It’s great that all our hard work has paid off, but most of all we’re so proud that our customers took the time to vote for us.
Getting to talk to Mary Portas was an unexpected surprise. She seemed impressed by our description of Broughty Ferry’s thriving shopping centre and said that our ‘Soup in a Bag’ concept was fabulous."
Clementine’s customers voted for the shop in an online poll in October 2011, ensuring that the small, local greengrocer made it on to the shortlist in the Best in Food category.
I think it's great to see this national recognition for Jan and Carole's shop which has brought back a green grocers to Broughty Ferry with panache, creativity and retail flair.

Clementine of Broughty Ferry is Shortlisted for Telegraph Magasine's, Best Small Shops in Britain Award

Congratulations to Clementine of Broughty Ferry owners, Jan McTaggart and Carole Sommerville, who are setting off to London to attend The Telegraph Magasine’s Best Small Shops in Britain Award Ceremony. This will be presented by Mary Queen of Shops, Mary Portas.

Clementine’s customers voted for the shop, online in October 2011, ensuring that the small, local greengrocer made it on to a shortlist of just three retailers for the Best in Food category. All the shops will be visited by a judge from The Daily Telegraph and the winner announced at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 22 February 2012.

The awards, now in their sixth year, invite customers to vote in nine categories, from women's and men's fashion to interiors, food, wine and books.

I am pleased that their dedication and creative approach to retailing combined with the fine quality of their produce, often locally sourced, has been widely recognised in our community by customers who have voted for them.

If they win they will be off to Spain to enjoy their award, a three-night stay for two at Hacienda de San Rafael, southern Spain, including flights.

Clementine owners Jan McTaggart and Carole Sommerville were delighted to hear of the nomination:

‘We’re very grateful to all those customers who took the time to vote for us. We’ve been working hard to make Clementine a success and we get lovely compliments from customers every day – but this is incredibly exciting.

We’re sure that, in addition to the locally sourced produce available in the shop, our weekly ‘Soup in a Bag’ has been a great way to get the shop noticed and attract regular customers.’

Parlour Cafe Cookbook Booksigning at Broughty Ferry’s greengrocer, Clementine Saturday 17 December 2011 2:30pm

On Saturday 17 December at 2.30pm, for just half an hour, Gillian Veal is making a guest appearance at Broughty Ferry’s greengrocer, Clementine, to sign copies of her incredibly popular Parlour Cafe Cookbook.
With mulled wine supplied by Clementine’s neighbour and local wine merchant, Aitkens Wines, this event will make Christmas food and gift shopping a positively pleasant experience.
Clementine has already sold dozens of copies of the book which encourages people to create tasty dishes using many of the ingredients available in the shop. Since the book first came out at the end of October, the first print run has sold out and the second run is in the shops now.
Clementine owners Jan McTaggart and Carole Sommerville have enjoyed talking to customers about the book. Carole Sommerville said:
‘We both love eating at the Parlour Cafe and I’ve cooked several of the dishes from the book. The recipes are easy to follow and I’ve been treating family and friends to some delicious meals.’
This event is a celebration of all things local to Dundee. The book is published by new Dundee publishing house, Kitchen Press, illustrated by local artist Jen Collins and Gillian herself is from Dundee.

Bags of Success as Clementine of Broughty Ferry Celebrate Their 1st Birthday

Carole Sommerville and Jan McTaggart
This weekend, Jan McTaggart and Carole Sommerville, the co-owners of Clementine of Broughty Ferry, having been celebrating the first birthday of their business. It's just a year since they opened the doors at 103 Gray Street to the Ferry’s only independent greengrocer.

Jan and Carole are delighted with business and
acknowledge the loyal support that their customers have demonstrated over the last 12 months.
One of the great successes of Clementine's has been ‘Soup in a Bag’ – everything you need to make the soup of the week, including the stock cubes (water not included). Jan and Carole have come up with more than 50 recipes and have sold nearly 10,000 bags over the course of the year.

Speaking at their shop earlier in the week, Jan said: ‘It’s been a great year and getting to know our customers has definitely been a highlight. They obviously appreciate the personal service we offer and they know that we keep our prices reasonable.’

Carole added: ‘And we’ve enjoyed great support from our local suppliers, it’s been really interesting to work with local farmers and wholesalers. We often get produce straight off the farm and that freshness makes such a difference to the quality and taste.’

So let's raise a soup spoon to salute an innovative retailer in the Ferry who deserve our continuing custom and their success!
