Westbay Court Residents Await Promised Improvements to Road Markings in Albert Road

Last Thursday I met two of the residents from Westbay Court to tell them about the improvements to road markings that the Council had offered to provide outside their block of apartments on Albert Road. This follows many months of campaigning about their entrance drive being obstructed by inconsiderately parked cars on the road outside.

Their concern has not just about their own convenience of being able to gain access to their driveway to their off street parking but also the safety of pedestrians walking along their street. They are especially concerned about the safety of young pupils from Eastern Primary School whose parents and carers use Albert Road as a street to park before walking their children into school. When cars and vans obstruct their driveway, the sight lines of Westbay Court residents are restricted when they are driving in and out. They need to see clearly that there are not approaching pedestrians as they approach crossing the pavement.

While what they have been offered is not all they had originally requested, they they have indicated they were willing to give this a try and hope that it works.

In the light of this meeting, I wrote to the Council to indicate that I was deferring my item from the agenda of the meeting of the City Development Committee last night and that the residents need not come forward for their deputation to the Committee. However, the residents have assured me that if there is any back sliding by the Council, they will not hesitate to resume their campaign with me.

Westbay Residents Demand Some Road Safety Action

Since the new Grove Academy was opened and Eastern Primary School moved to the upgraded old Grove premises, both school have been opening their doors to an increasing number of pupils. This has led to regular parking difficulties for residents of Westbay Court in Albert Road.

Residents of the 17 apartments in Westbay Court have their own off street parking but they find it is very difficult to exit or enter their driveway during the forty minutes or so in the mornings and afternoons when parents and carers are using their road as a very congested drop-off and pick-up zone. Frequently Westbay residents find vehicles parking part way across the entrance to the driveway to their private car parking spaces. Their concerns are not merely about their own inconvenience from getting blocked in. They are very concerned about the risks to life and limb of young children walking and crossing Albert Road because for the restricted sight lines for residents as they exit and enter their driveways in their cars.

Residents first contacted me about this in the Spring last year and on a number of occasions I raised this in writing and at meetings with staff in the City Development Department. Despite a number of reminders from me and the residents, so far the residents think that their reasonable requests have been not been taken seriously enough.

I support the residents' view that this is an accident waiting to happen. I urge the Transportation section of the City Development Department to respond positively to the residents' request. At the same time, I urge parents and carers to drive and park safely and considerately in Albert Road because neither they nor the residents of Westbay Court want to be the cause of a road accident with a young pedestrian.

Jessie's Kitchen Win Scottish Homebaker of the Year 2012

Jessie's Kitchen in Albert Road, in Broughty Ferry has just scooped the prestigious Scottish Homebaker of the Year Award 2012.

The Broughty Ferry Café opened in June 2011 and has quickly established itself as a regular haunt of locals and visitors who appreciate its warm welcome and delicious food.

The independent professional reviewer who visited the Café and sampled its wonderful range of home made cakes made the following observations:

"On entering Jessie's you find a bright, airy and definitely 'Pink' room by by- passing the extensive display of cakes in the inner hall. The young and attentive staff give this place a trendy feel. Very clean and a good light lunch and high-tea menu. I was overwhelmed with the not one but two boxes of cakes I was given to sample at my leisure and this alone proved confidence in their bakers' ability. Three bakers take responsibility for the excellent cakes, Mary-Jane, Alison and Nicola. ...... They (the cakes) were wonderful particularly the blueberry iced sponge and the Florentine-FAB. The Apple and Caramel iced cake was a new one to me and was incredible."

Congratulations to staff at Jessie's Kitchen for this national award. Their Café is another fine example of the outstanding excellence of shops and local services in Broughty Ferry. By my recokoning this is the fifth such national award this year for Ferry retail businesses. This is one of the reasons why central Broughty Ferry is such an attractive place to access shops and local services.
