Whether or not this was caused by waves braking over the end of the pier, it was clear that some of the stone setts which previously formed the surface of the pavement are now in the sea.
On Wednesday morning, I contacted the Roads' Maintenance Partnership who arranged within a few hours to install a temporary metal cover over the hole pending a more permanent repair. This was a quick and efficient response in the interests of public safety.
I have also requested that the stone setts are removed from the Beach and retained for the tradespeople who will come to fill in the hole and restore the surface.
